Minot State celebrates International Education Week

Minot State University will celebrate International Education Week with several events Nov. 18-22.

“International Education Week is a time for the Minot State community to learn about world cultures. We do this by highlighting the various study abroad programs available to our students and by celebrating the beautiful diversity of our student body,” said Libby Claerbout, Minot State director of international programs.

The week will feature a global sights photo contest display, showcasing international travels by the Minot State community, outside the Beaver Creek Café.

The Office of International Programs sent out a call for submissions to the 10th annual contest earlier this fall before narrowing down the winning entries and honorable mentions. The photos feature locations from around the world, from first place student Emily Schmidt’s piece, titled “Chuckle Park,” taken in Australia to Luke Charley’s “Point of Silence” taken in Austria that snagged the first place entry for the faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees category.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, two study abroad panel discussions will be held in the Westlie Room at 11 a.m. and noon. The sessions will give students interested in studying abroad the opportunity to ask recently returned study abroad alumni questions and hear stories about their adventures.

Thursday, Nov. 21 will feature the international cultural celebration, open to Minot State students, faculty, and staff, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second floor of the Student Center.

“Each November, during International Education Week, Minot State University celebrates cultures from around the world. During the international cultural celebration, students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to share an aspect of their home country, or native culture, through colorful displays, photos, cuisine, music, or other performances,” Claerbout said. “It is a fun and lively event that is very popular.”

International Education Week, held annually during the third week of November, is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. International Education Week promotes programs that prepare Americans for a global environment while attracting future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
