Librarians at Gordon B. Olson are resources, too

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State Gordon B. Olson library has lots of resources for students to use. But those resources aren’t confined to books, articles, and services. One of the most important resources that students forget about are the librarians themselves.

Mara West, instruction and reference librarian, has newly joined the library staff at MSU, but wants students to know that the library is there to help in other ways than book rental.

“I got my library degree (MSLS) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I also studied art history. I worked in campus libraries at UNC, but this is my first librarian job,” she said. “I’ve had different jobs and I’ve pursued different interests, and I feel that the library profession is a perfect fit for me because I get to learn about many different subjects by working with students and classes.”

When most students think of librarians, they think of someone who strictly helps them find and check out books. West, who started at MSU in April 2021, has a much more complex role in the library and can help in many more ways, along with helping students find the correct resources they may need.

“My day consists of one or two hours at the information desk, where I’m available to help students find books or articles and use the library in other ways, printing is a big one. Aside from that, I work on instruction sessions and I work on various ongoing projects, such as our project to digitize Minot State yearbooks so that they are available and searchable on our website,” West said. “Shout out to Anton Huether, webmaster and graphic designer in Information Technology Central, who began the yearbook digitization project and got much of it completed.”

Although her role is big, she enjoys the aspect of connecting with the students on campus the most, and diving into a project with them to help as much as she can.

“I like learning about what students are working on and helping them find library resources to support that work,” she said.

The Gordon B. Olson library offers many resources such as textbook reserves, book and article checkouts, ability to access library services remotely, printing, as well as the writing center and E-tutoring.

West mentions an aspect of the library that some students may not be as aware of.

“Anyone can request a personal consultation with a librarian to help with their research,” she said.

On the Minot State library webpage, students are able to email a librarian, book an appointment for a personalized research consultant (in person or remotely), and submit a reference question using a form.

West is just one of the staff members that are willing to help with students' education in many ways. To learn more about the library and what it has to offer, visit the Gordon B. Olson Library Homepage.
