SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: From family to Trinity

MINOT, N.D. – Even at the beginning of her nursing degree, Minot native Alyssa Doering had every reason to call Minot State University home.

“When considering where I would go for college, MSU stood out because I could still be close to my family and they had a really good nursing program,” Doering said. “My grandpa (John Doering, professor of business and marketing) used to teach in the College of Business, and I loved coming and visiting his office. I also liked the fact that my parents and all of my aunts and uncles attended MSU as well. So, it was a natural decision to attend MSU, and I am so thankful that I did!”

Doering continued to foster connections during her time at Minot State, valuing the relationships that she has been able to build between herself and her professors and mentors. The support and community she has experienced from her professors will be one of the things she will miss the most about Minot State.

“I have had a great experience with all of my professors and instructors in both my prerequisites and nursing program. They have all gone above and beyond to enhance my education,” Doering began. “I remember one circumstance that really stood out to me. It was the fall of my junior year (2020), and my grandpa was hospitalized with COVID-19 for 23 days and eventually passed away. My two instructors, Carrie Lewis (instructor of nursing) and Kim Tiedman (assistant professor of nursing), were so gracious to me during one of the most difficult times of my life. They allowed me flexibility as to when I finished assignments and they would record lectures online for me. Their support left a huge impact on me.”

After four years of hard work, Doering will soon take her next steps as a registered nurse.

“The nursing department at MSU did a great job preparing me for my career as a nurse by the significant number of clinical hours I obtained from clinicals in the hospital and clinical settings as well as simulation,” she said. “I feel like I am better prepared and confident entering the profession of nursing by having that.

“I will take my NCLEX in June, and then I have accepted a registered nurse position at Trinity Health in Same Day Surgery beginning in August.”

As for advice for future students, Doering keeps it simple.

“Take one step at a time and breathe.”
