Rural Veteran Suicide Prevention Summitt comes to MSU’s Ann Nicole Nelson Hall

MINOT, N.D. – Together With Veterans has partnered with Minot State University to bring a Rural Veteran Suicide Prevention Summit to Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on Monday, Sept. 30.

The free public event, titled “Issues and Initiatives for Rural Veteran Access to Mental Wellness, Care, and Support,” will feature multiple speakers and vendors, beginning with registration and vendor visit at 8 a.m. and concluding with closing remarks at 5 p.m.

Together with Veterans (TWV) is a community-based suicide prevention program for rural veterans. TWV involves partnering with rural veterans and their communities to implement community-based suicide prevention programs and strategies.

Vernon “Longhorn” Davis, a U.S. Army veteran, public speaker, and comedian, will give the keynote address scheduled for 4-5 p.m.

Topics include military culture, adverse childhood experiences and military service, de-escalation techniques, Fargo VAMC suicide prevention data, Western Interstate Commission for High Education, and a spouse’s perspective on mental wellness. According to TWV, the event is for all mental health professionals, military leadership, healthcare workers, first responders, and any other professionals who interact with veterans, service members, and their families.

After registration, the morning sessions include Max Pontenila and Randy McDonald from TWV-Minot, and Tom Ross, mayor of Minot, with opening remarks. Nicole Frohlich, a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, and Aaron Moos, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, will present on military culture. Taylor Keller and Carrie Richardson-Ozuna will present on adverse childhood experiences and military service. Sarah Kempt Tabbut, from the Fargo VA Medical Center, will present national, state, and local suicide data and statistics.

The afternoon session starts with Dennis Mohatt, vice president, and Jason Alves, director of veteran initiatives, from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Aaron Moss, law enforcement instructor, will present on de-escalation techniques; and Amy Allendar-Smith will give a lecture titled “The other side: A spouse’s perspective on suicide and mental health.”
