CAT GRAFFAM is an artist and educator based in Portland, Maine. She received her BFA in painting from New England College in 2015 and has since exhibited internationally and received awards for her art as well as her advocacy for trans and intersex rights. She creates figurative paintings, video essays on issues in the art world, and occasionally makes video games. Her work has been featured in TIME, VICE, Make: Magazine, and on the cover of POLITICO.

ELIGIBILITY
Works in any medium, traditional or experimental, including photographs, qualify. All artworks must be original. Work must be ready to exhibit, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited in an INT’L exhibition. It is preferred that two-dimensional work be framed and protected by clear acrylic glazing, unless alternative display is integral to the work.

AWARDS
$2500 in Cash and Purchase Awards: five Merit Awards and one Best of Show chosen by juror. Purchase Awards selected by faculty committee. Best of Show earns a future solo exhibition and an invitation to future Best of the Best exhibits.

ENTRY FORMAT & PROCEDURE
Entries will be judged from a high resolution digital image and up to 2 detail images. Files must be in jpg format, minimum of 300 ppi at approximately 8 x 10 inches. Name files as follows: A_titleofwork.jpg, B_titleofwork.jpg, etc. Abbreviate as needed on the file name, but use complete title on entry form. Submit images, non-refundable entry fee, and completed entry form by email or postal mail.

Mail Entries: Send images on labeled CD, DVD or flash storage along with fee and printed entry form to INT’L All Media, Northwest Arts Center, Minot State University, 500 University Avenue West, Minot, North Dakota 58707. Storage will not be returned.

Entry Fee: 2 entries/$30; Additional Entries: $5 each. Maximum of five entries allowed per artist. Include a $25 annual membership fee, and you may enter at the NAC Art Friends Members’ rate: 2 entries/$20; Additional Entries: $2 each. Pay online at: minotstateu.edu/nac/pay or by mail with a personal check or money order. Fees payable in US dollars. Entries not accepted without the proper fee.

NOTIFICATION
Entries will be acknowledged by e-mail as they are received. All entrants will be notified of selection results via e-mail on September 4th. For a hard copy letter of notification please provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

SALES & COPYRIGHTS
Sales will be encouraged. A 30% commission will be charged on all works sold or purchased. Your entry grants permission to photograph your work and use your images for promotional or educational purposes only.

CATALOG
The INT'L juried exhibitions publish an illustrated catalog. A complimentary copy will be sent to each entrant. Extra copies of the catalog may be purchased for $7.00 per catalog.

INSURANCE
Minot State University will insure all works from their delivery to their departure. Settlement for works damaged in transit remains the responsibility of artist and shipper. NAC and MSU are not liable for any damage or loss occurring in transit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Juried Exhibition?
A juried exhibition shows artwork selected through a competitive process. Artists submit images and information for the artworks they hope will be selected by the juror. A juror is responsible for reviewing all the submissions, and determining which of the artworks will be declined, accepted, or awarded additional prizes. At the Northwest Arts Center, the initial submissions are reviewed electronically, and often the juror makes their final decisions about awards while looking at the artwork in person.

Why do you have a Juried Exhibition?
The Juried Exhibitions at Minot State University were started by faculty and students in 1969 to bring contemporary artwork of merit to our region for the enrichment of audiences, and to start a teaching collection through purchase awards.

How are Juried exhibitions selected?
The Northwest Arts Center invites guest jurors for the INT’L Juried Exhibitions; typically an artist, curator, museum or gallery director, or other arts professional. We provide the juror some basic guidelines: an ideal range for the number of pieces they select, number and type of awards and purchase recommendations. Then, the juror determines and uses their own criteria for selection. In this way, a juried exhibition is always created to a large degree by a subjective sets of standards and individual taste. Our jurors are not provided with the names of artists or any other identifying information, a process known as a “blind jurying.”

Why do you have an entry fee?
The entry fee is used to support the juried exhibition and provides for exhibition expenses, including awards, juror costs, marketing materials, and a printed catalog. Entry fees do not underwrite any other programming or activities at the NAC.

Are there additional expenses beyond the submission fee if selected?
There is no additional exhibition fee, beyond paying for shipping/transportation of your art to and from the NAC.

Does my fee get refunded if I’m not selected?
Submitting to the juried exhibitions does not guarantee you will be curated into the exhibition, and the NAC does not refund entry fees for unaccepted artist submissions.

What happens if I am selected?
You will be contacted by the selection notification date with shipping/delivery details and artist information. Artwork must arrive presentation ready (framed or with appropriate installation materials).

Who is responsible for delivery, handling and installation of work if selected?
Artists are responsible to arrange for shipping, delivery and pickup if selected. NAC staff receives, handles, designs and installs the exhibition.

Can my artwork be for sale?
Work for sale must be priced by the artist. The Northwest Arts Center encourages sales, and has a 30% commission for sales. This commission contributes to supporting the mission, programming and sustainability of Northwest Arts Center.

What are the restrictions for A/V equipment?
For new media or time-based artwork, we are able to provide audio and visual equipment and installation. Please reach out with any questions before or during submission.

What are the restrictions for sculpture and installation work?
The gallery has a range of bases and pedestals, as well as wall mounted shelves. Work cannot be attached to the floor, and may be attached to the ceiling at the discretion of the NAC. Mountable 3D assemblage may be attached directly to the wall, and may weigh up to a maximum of 50 lbs, with the appropriate installation hardware provided by the artist.
